This summer I visited the Bok Tower Gardens twice. It is in the Lake Wales area of Central Florida. It is a secret and magnificent gem. The gardens are breathtaking. The history of Edward Bok, his life, the planning for the gardens, the “Singing Tower’, all of it is surprising and compelling. It is a difficult place to leave. One can spend hours seeing new vistas, beautiful flowers, trees, plants, butterflies, birds, secret paths…I could go on a long time. And their wonderful little café actually has vegetarian and vegan fare :)! It is well worth a trip to west Central Florida to enjoy one of the last islands (literally) of serenity and grace.
The quote above was spoken to Edward Bok by his mother regularly. He achieved it and beyond.
My prayer for all of us is that we, too can make this world a bit better or more beautiful because we lived in it. It might be subtle and it might be simple. Maybe one rescued an tiny critter from an animal shelter. Maybe one planted a window herb garden. Maybe one gave hugs to children that were neglected. Maybe one sang beautiful songs. Maybe one wrote beautiful and inspiring and hopeful words. Maybe one just smiled at someone that thought life had forgotten them.
We may or may not leave behind acres of glorious gardens and “Singing Towers” but each gift we do leave behind will make this world just a bit better or more beautiful. We “matter”!
